After a magnificent breakthrough season at West Ham United could Declan Rice be set for a move away from the London Stadium this summer?
Declan Rice enjoyed a magnificent breakthrough season with West Ham United last term. Despite being brought through as a centre-back, he played the majority of his side’s games in a defensive midfield position, breaking up play and keeping possession well alongside the likes of Mark Noble and Pedro Obiang.
The 20 year old had played several times in the previous season but hadn’t quite caught the eye in the same way that he did during 2018/2019 with his fine displays earning him a call-up to the England squad despite him previously representing the Republic of Ireland in three friendly fixtures.
The Hammers are not a club that are happy to sell at the first opportunity and we have seen them keep hold of players like Marko Arnautovic and Dmitri Payet for longer than expected despite pressure from the players to force a move away from the London Stadium.
As such, it will take a gigantic bid to prize away their new young star but there are teams that could be interested in his services, particularly as he appears to be breaking through towards becoming a first-choice England international in the coming years.
One club that have already adopted a policy of signing young, British stars this summer is Manchester United who have brought in Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka. They may need to bolster their midfield options too and have been intermittently linked with Rice over the last twelve months.
Manchester City have now signed Rodri who plays in a similar position, but they may want to bolster their English contingent for the registration rules and a player who can play in both midfield and defence will be helpful to Guardiola’s squad whilst Tottenham, Liverpool and Arsenal are also all possible destinations.
