With Rafael Benitez having left St. James’ Park for the Chinese Super League, who will Newcastle United turn to in the dugout ahead of the upcoming Premier League season?

Understandably, many supporters on Tyneside are not happy with the latest developments coming from the club with immensely popular manager Rafael Benitez, a former Champions League winner during his time with Liverpool, deciding to call an end upon his spell with the Magpies.

The Spanish coach has decided to join Chinese Super League outfit Dalian Yifang after “losing trust” in the powers that be at St James’ Park, but who will Mike Ashley turn to now in order to get the fans back on side and to try and build on the work done by Benitez in winning promotion and consolidating their top-tier position in the last few seasons?

The early favourite for the job is Mikel Arteta, currently assistant to Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. The Spaniard is highly-rated as a coach and was linked with his former club Arsenal last summer before they hired Unai Emery, but would he be willing to kick-off his own managerial career in such a precarious job?

Elsewhere in the running, Roberto Martinez has been linked with a move back to the Premier League although it remains unclear as to whether he would be willing to leave the Belgian national team to take up the role whilst Sean Dyche and Claudio Ranieri are another two manager that have enjoyed relative success in the Premier League in the past and would perhaps both be seen as more realistic appointments.

Steven Gerrard has already moved to distance himself from a move to St James’ Park but could perhaps still be tempted to move south of the border away from Rangers whilst some of the more traditional names you see linked with vacant Premier League managerial positions such as Mark Hughes and David Moyes can also be seen in the list of potential candidates.
