One of the transfer sagas that looks set to play out this summer involves Ajax defender Matthijs De Ligt and a host of top clubs vying for his signature.
Matthijs De Ligt has announced himself as one of the biggest young talents in European football this season in leading Ajax to the Eredivisie title and Champions League semi-finals and now a host of top clubs from across Europe are looking to sign the Dutch starlet.
The centre-back has been pivotal in one of the most successful seasons in de Godenzonen’s recent history but with the Eredivisie struggling to compete financially with bigger and better leagues on the continent, it seems that De Ligt is set to leave Amsterdam for pastures new this summer.
With team-mate Frenkie de Jong having already secured his route out of the club to join Barcelona in time for the new season, the Catalonians are favourites to secure the signature of de Ligt already.
The path from Ajax to Barcelona is a well-trodden one, with the likes of Johan Cruyff, Marc Overmars and Ronald de Boer among the huge names that have played for both clubs in the past and this connection could tempt de Ligt who clearly had a sense of the history and traditions surrounding de Godenzonen.
But unsurprisingly given the quality that de Ligt has shown this season, Barcelona aren’t the only club interested. PSG are desperately looking for a long-term replacement for Thiago Silva and de Ligt’s mentality as well as his defensive stability will surely tempt them to spend more big money on another transfer target this summer.
Meanwhile there are several Premier League sides looking to improve defensively this summer. Manchester City are out at 16/1 to sign de Ligt despite Nicolas Otamendi and Vincent Kompany being set to leave whilst both Liverpool and Manchester United are reportedly also in the running.
