Liverpool moved nine points clear at the top of the table thanks to their 2-0 win over defending champions Manchester City on Sunday, with Arne Slot’s dream start to life as boss continuing.

The Merseysiders have now won 11 of their 13 league games under Slot and 18 of their 20 games in all competitions this term.

Newcastle are 11th in the table, four points off the top four and were held to a 1-1 draw by struggling Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Newcastle vs Liverpool Tips

Tip 1

Liverpool have passed virtually every test they have been set so far this season and the midweek trip to St James’ Park offers another examination of their title credentials.

It looks like Slot’s side are good enough to last the distance and they head to the north east on the back of two fantastic 2-0 victories over Real Madrid in the Champions League and City in the Premier League.

The leaders have often got themselves in front in matches this season before managing the outcome of the game superbly and, despite their fantastic form, it’s a bit of surprise to see they have only scored more than two goals on three occasions in the league.

Instead, there have been plenty of narrow victories and it could be another case of Liverpool getting the job done rather than the leaders blowing the opposition away on Wednesday.

Newcastle have not been full of goals this season, with only four clubs in the top-flight scoring fewer than their tally of 14, and three of their last four league games have featured under three goals in total.

Tip 2

Virgil van Dijk has been outstanding for Liverpool this season with the Dutch centre-back helping Slot’s side keep seven clean sheets in the league.

The Reds’ improvement in defence has been one of the notable facets of their fine campaign so far, which Van Dijk has marshalled brilliantly, but the 33-year-old is also a major threat at the other end.

The Liverpool captain has only scored twice in all competitions this season but should have added to his tally against City, heading one effort against the post and then directing another just wide in the first half.

If he gets another similar opportunity from a set-piece against Newcastle it’s likely Van Dijk will take it as he goes in search of his 26th Liverpool goal.
