Liverpool vs Newcastle United Match Preview
Premier League action returns after the 2019-20 season’s first international break with Liverpool aiming to make it five wins out of five – and, at least temporarily, move five points clear at the top of the table.
Already the signs are pointing towards another two-horse race for the English title because Liverpool and champions Manchester City have resumed in the superb form they ended last term, while those hoping to challenge them are dropping points left, right and centre.
Understandably, the Reds are untouchably hot favourites to complete a ‘nap hand’ of victories to open their campaign, but there is a warning for them in that Newcastle’s only success of the season so far came in a shock 1-0 triumph away to Tottenham.
It is still too early to predict with confidence just how Steve Bruce will fare in charge of the Magpies, but at least his team are unbeaten in 90 minutes in their last three league and cup matches and have conceded more than one goal in only one of their five games so far.
However, optimism can easily fly out of the window against a team like Liverpool who, if the two-week hiatus has not disrupted their rhythm, are well capable of blowing away even the classiest opponents.
Having improved defensively since a poor performance in their 3-1 defeat at Norwich, Newcastle may well avoid an embarrassment here. But it’s difficult to see them stopping the Liverpool juggernaut from powering on in the quest to end their agonising 30-year wait for a league title.
