Liverpool vs Manchester United Match Preview

Manchester United are the only team to have taken points off Liverpool in the Premier League this season – but are not expected to stop their fiercest rivals from reaching another landmark on Sunday.

If the runaway leaders win yet again, then by the end of this month they will have completed a full calendar year with a 100% home Premier League record. They last dropped points at Anfield on January 30 2019 and their next home game is on February 1 against Southampton.

Of course, a much greater incentive for United to beat their most hated foes, apart from boosting their own top-four cause, is to put the brakes on Liverpool’s relentless march to a first English league title for 30 years. But it would only be a small dent as the Reds go into the weekend 14 points clear with a game in hand.

At least Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side should have some confidence from the 1-1 draw at Old Trafford in October when they led for almost 50 minutes before conceding a late equaliser.

However, it would be a blow for United if Marcus Rashford, now established as their talisman, had to miss the trip to Merseyside with a back complaint. At the time of writing, meanwhile, Ashley Young was about to complete a move to Inter Milan and thus Harry Maguire had been confirmed as the club’s new captain.

United will hope to produce a display akin to their 2-1 triumph at Manchester City six weeks ago, hitting Liverpool on the counter-attack. But Jurgen Klopp’s men are more solid defensively than City these days and while it could be tight, that full 12 months of home Premier League wins looks set to be achieved.
