Crystal Palace vs Aston Villa Match Preview
Crystal Palace need to show last weekend’s victory at Manchester United was no one-off by improving their worrying home form when they host Aston Villa.
The Eagles rode their luck at Old Trafford and made the most of their chances to win 2-1 in a dramatic conclusion, continuing the run of strong results on their travels which they had maintained throughout last season.
But at Selhurst Park, it has been a different story. Roy Hodgson’s side struggle to score goals on their own pitch – only Huddersfield bagged fewer at home in the Premier League last term – and two 0-0 draws have ensued there this August, including one against League Two club Colchester in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday that resulted in elimination via a penalty shootout.
So will it be the ‘home’ Palace or the ‘away’ Palace that turns up on Saturday? This is certainly no three-point ‘gimme’ because Aston Villa have made an encouraging return to the top flight and enjoyed a 2-0 victory over Everton last weekend.
Dean Smith’s side led for over an hour of their only away league game so far at Tottenham and dished out a 6-1 thumping to Crewe in the Carabao Cup this week.
Palace are difficult to trust at home and with Villa sure to be full of confidence after those two decisive wins, they simply look too big a price to triumph again in south London.
