History of the National League

The fifth tier of the English pyramid, the National League is the first on the ladder to include both professional and semi-professional teams. However, most of the teams in the first of the three divisions hold professional status.

First formed in 1979 after a merging of the Northern Premier League and Southern League, England’s fifth tier has had several face-lifts over the years, including a range of new names, most notably and recognisably as the Football Conference.

It was only in 2005 that the National League was split into three divisions, with the sub-tiers being divided based on geography – North and South.

The likes of Luton Town, Lincoln City and AFC Wimbledon have all passed through the stomping grounds of the National League in recent years, propelled up the football pyramid off the back of dominating runs in the division. Who will be next to join them in climbing out of football’s fifth tier?
