History of the Eredivisie
The history of the Eredivisie is a contentious one. Now considered among Europe’s premier league competitions, the Eredivisie only began life in 1956. Previously, professional football had been banned outright in the Netherlands, much to the dislike of the nation’s crop of talented homegrown players. Though amateur football was popular, it was played for free, a situation that led many Dutch players to join professional clubs abroad.
The KNVB, the official Dutch Football Association, often banned or suspended players who sought a professional career abroad from playing for the national team, despite protests from fans.
It wasn’t until the mid-50s that the KNVB finally caved, with a host of amateur clubs across the country tired of losing their stars to richer contracts outside of Netherlands’ borders.
The Eredivisie, in its current guise, formed in 1956-57, with 18 clubs competing for a title that was eventually won by capital-based side Ajax.
A breeding ground for some of the biggest names in football, many of the world’s elite players have found their footing in the Eredivisie. The league’s history sports a long list of illustrious graduates – Johan Cruyff, Ronaldo, Dennis Bergkamp, and more recently Frenkie de Jong, Virgil van Dijk and Matthijs de Ligt.
