History of the MLS

The first MLS season kicked off in 1996, when it included 10 teams from across the continent. The initial years were dominated by D.C. United, which claimed three titles in the first four seasons. Having kept a low profile for its first few years, the league’s popularity began to grow as new teams were formed and more marquee names signed.

The late 1990s were a tumultuous period for the MLS. The USA national team finished plumb last at the 1998 World Cup. Then, in 2002, Miami Fusion and Tampa Bay Mutiny had their entries rejected on financial grounds, bringing the number of competing clubs back down to 10.

When the US national team stormed to surprise quarter-final place at the 2002 World Cup, interest in the MLS began to flourish once more. A new Designated Player rule broke the salary cap that had been placed on teams previously, meaning MLS clubs had the money to attract more global stars and grizzled veterans. In 2007, England captain David Beckham arrived at Los Angeles Galaxy and the MLS expanded into Canada with the addition of Toronto FC.

As of 2021, 27 teams compete in the North American soccer league – and there are plans to expand this further over the next few seasons.

What is the MLS Cup?

The Major League Soccer Cup takes place in December, at the end of the MLS season. Unlike in European leagues, the team with the most points in the league are not the sole winners. Instead, a 12-team playoff takes place – with the final being held in December. The winner claims the coveted Philip F. Anschutz Trophy. Los Angeles Galaxy have dominated the end of season tournament since its inception in 1996, winning five titles and appearing in a string of consecutive finals.

We’ll bring you a great selection of MLS betting tips and predictions for every round of the playoffs, and of course the final itself.
