2021 African Cup of Nations
The Africa Cup of Nations is the major international tournament pitting the national teams of countries from across the continent against each other, much like the European Championships or the Copa America. It takes place every two years and the 2021 edition, delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic will be the 33rd tournament to be competed for.
Egypt were the winners of the first tournament back in 1957 and they remain the most successful team in the history of the competition to this day having lifted the trophy no less than seven times in their history. The Pharaohs lost out in the final of the 2017 competition though at the hands of Cameroon. The 2019 edition ended with a narrow 1-0 victory for Algeria over Senegal. That was only the second Africa Cup of Nations title for the Algerians, and the first since 1990.
When is the African Cup of Nations?
The African Cup of Nations has been a hindrance to Premier League clubs in the past due to the scheduling of the competition usually clashing with major European leagues. The 2021 tournament will take place between the 9th of January 2022 to 6th of February 2022.
Holders Cameroon were originally scheduled to be the hosts of the previous edition, but due to infrastructural delays they were stripped of hosting to the competition and it was instead handed to Egypt. However, Cameroon is ready to host this year’s edition after they failed to host it back in 2019.

2021 AFCON qualification predictions
The 2021 African Cup of Nations Qualification process has now been completed and we know which teams will be competing in Cameroon. As the hosts, Cameroon was the team to qualify automatically and alongside them we have two debutants in Comoros and Gambia.
Among the more seasoned nations are former winners Tunisia, Nigeria and the Ivory Coast plus a Senegal side that includes Premier League players Sadio Mane and Cheikhou Kouyate. They won’t be the only Premier League stars on show though as Liverpool’s Mo Salah will lead the line for Egypt, Manchester United’s Eric Bailly and Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha will feature for the Ivory Coast and Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez is the talisman for Algeria.
