Wolves vs Newcastle United Match Preview
Newcastle’s spell of good form has suffered a pre-Christmas downturn and they face a difficult task to reverse it when they visit Wolves.
Everything was looking rosy for the Magpies until just before 5.55pm on Boxing Day. They led 1-0 away to Manchester United, whom they would have climbed above in the Premier League table had they won, but after conceding an equaliser they ended up losing 4-1.
Since then, it has been downhill all the way. Further defeats followed against Everton and Leicester and now Newcastle find themselves having to play an FA Cup third-round replay against League One club Rochdale after being pegged back for a 1-1 draw.
A relegation battle is far from out of the question and manager Steve Bruce’s worries will increase if his side are beaten again at Wolves, whom the bookmakers rate as red-hot favourites to claim three points from this game.
You can see why, because Wolves have built on last season’s excellent seventh-place finish to be firmly in contention to end up a position or two higher this time around. They will see this as a fine opportunity to end a run of three matches without a victory.
Wolves should get the job done, but there is rarely much between these clubs when they meet and Newcastle have a good recent record at Molineux (see stats above) so this is unlikely to be a walk in the park for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.
