Wolves vs Manchester United Match Preview
Molineux was where Manchester United’s season quickly unravelled last term – and this Monday Night Football encounter represents a big early test of character for their squad.
Although United had suffered a defeat at Arsenal the previous weekend, it was in the FA Cup quarter-final away to Wolves that manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s honeymoon period really ended and another 2-1 league loss at the same venue – with Diogo Jota on the scoresheet each time – formed part of a dismal spell of only two wins in 12 games to end the season.
The raucous atmosphere for those evening matches possibly unnerved the Red Devils and it could be the same again here, with Solskjaer’s team now distinctly more youthful and arguably short of characters who can cope comfortably in high-pressure situations.
Much will hinge on new signings Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who both impressed in the opening 4-0 home win over Chelsea – a scoreline that flattered United as they were second best while their opponents were peppering the woodwork in the first half.
Wolves, of course, are competing in the Europa League qualifiers and after strolling through their opening two rounds, they face a much stiffer examination against Torino for a place in the group stage, with the opening leg of that tie taking place in Italy on Thursday.
But manager Nuno Espirito Santo has rotated his squad successfully up to now and after resting several key players in Thursday’s 4-0 home win over Pyunik Yerevan, his strongest XI should be fresh enough to cause United plenty more problems here.
