Real Madrid vs Espanyol Match Preview
Espanyol’s 26-season stay in the Spanish top flight is at risk of coming to an end – and their plight is unlikely to improve when they visit Real Madrid.
Barcelona’s second club are founder members of La Liga but have never won the title. They have been relegated four times since 1963, bouncing straight back on each occasion, and are now again under threat of the drop which they last experienced in 1994.
Second from bottom of the table, currently five points from safety, Espanyol appointed former Girona and Sevilla coach Pablo Machin as their new manager in early October but he has yet to work the oracle, winning only three of his first 10 games in charge – and two of those were against Ludogorets Razgrad in the Europa League group stage.
The very fact Espanyol are competing in Europe, having finished seventh in La Liga last term, indicates how far they have fallen – and it may well be a big factor in their decline.
Real Madrid, meanwhile, are matching strides with Barcelona at the top of the table, just ahead of Sevilla who are the gatecrashers in the title race. The week before Christmas will be a huge one for Los Blancos as they visit both Valencia and Barcelona within four days.
Zinedine Zidane’s side may not be at their brilliant best this season, but they are generally reliable and are expected to pile on the misery for Espanyol with a routine success.
