Portugal vs Scotland Tips
Tip 1
After eight goals were scored across this pair’s opening Nations League matches – all four teams finding the net – it’s fair to assume Sunday’s encounter can produce at least a goal for both Portugal and Scotland.
The Tartan Army have scored at least once in five of their last six, including goals against both Germany and Switzerland at this summer’s European Championship finals.
Although the Scots perform poorly at major tournaments, they generally give a decent account of themselves outside of the those formats, most recently finishing second to Euro 2024 winners Spain during qualifying, firing 17 goals in just eight fixtures.
Their leaky defence will be a serious issue again on Sunday, however, especially when coming up against a Portugal attack littered with devastating talent.
Tip 2
After reaching the milestone of 900 career goals with his strike against Croatia on Thursday, you’d be foolish to think that Cristiano Ronaldo will rest on his laurels.
That goal was CR7’s 131st for his country, with three of them coming this year and a further 10 in 2023.
This type of opposition is Ronaldo’s bread and butter and since three of his last five goalscoring appearances have resulted in a brace for the 39-year-old, we wouldn’t put it past him adding another couple to his growing tally against Scotland’s porous defence.
Portugal Form, Team News & Predicted Line-Up
A Selecao began their 2024/25 Nations League campaign with a 2-1 victory over Croatia on Thursday night – their first win in 90 minutes since 22nd June’s 3-0 mauling of Turkey at Euro 2024.
There are no fresh injury concerns for Roberto Martinez to ponder. Nelson Semedo and Joao Neves made appearances from the bench as half-time substitutes on Thursday and could be in contention for a start.
Portugal Predicted XI: Costa; Dalot, Dias, A. Silva, Mendes; Neves, Vitinha; B. Silva, Fernandes, Leao; Ronaldo.
Scotland Form, Team News & Predicted Line-Up
The Tartan Army valiantly fought back from two goals behind in their Nations League opener only to have Poland inflict late heartbreak, leaving them now in search of their first victory in six matches.
Steve Clarke is expected to field a familiar team for their trip to Portugal. After Che Adams was forced to withdrawn from the squad due to injury, Lyndon Dykes is the likely choice to lead the line again in Lisbon.
Scotland Predicted XI: Gunn; Ralston, Hanley, McKenna, Robertson; McClean, Gilmour; McGinn, McTominay, Christie; Dykes.
