Mexico vs Costa Rica Predictions

Mexico may still be enduring the curse of being knocked out in the second round of World Cup competitions, but they are now back in familiar territory with the Gold Cup this summer. With no Copa America invitation as has come to be expected, el Tricolor can focus their attentions on winning an 11th CONCACAF Gold Cup title which they will be keen to do after only reaching the semi-final of the last tournament two years ago.

It’s been a confident and comfortable start to the tournament for Gerardo Martino and his side too as they breezed through the group stages with the maximum nine points on the board. After smashing Cuba by a. 7-0 scoreline in their opening game, Tata Martino’s men picked up three goals in resulting wins over Canada and Martinique and they’re now expected to progress through another fixture with a win at odds of 2/5 with William Hill.

Costa Rica have a knack of raising their game in crunch matches, as indicated by the fact that they have managed to secure qualification to four of the last five World Cups, a remarkable achievement for a country of their size with little in the way of football history. However, having not managed to get their hands on the CONCACAF Gold Cup since 1989, focus will switch back to this tournament this summer as los Ticos look to earn some silverware for the fans to celebrate.

Gustavo Matosas’s men earned two victories from their first two matches in the tournament, with Nicaragua falling to a 0-4 defeat and Bermuda to a 1-2 defeat which confirmed Bryan Ruiz and company would be heading through to the knock-out stages. As such, defeat to Haiti in their final game didn’t count for much, but it still displays a weakness in this Costa Rica side which perhaps explains why they’re out at 8/1 here with Bet365.

We’re backing the goals in this game. Mexico are on fine form at the moment, but they have shipped three goals in their last two outings and in Costa Rica, they come up against a side that have already found the net on seven occasions in this tournament and can call upon the likes of Joel Campbell and Bryan Ruiz. El Tri should still win but we’re backing them in the match result and both teams to score market at 3/1 with PaddyPower.

Raul Jimenez is the man who leads the line for this Mexico attack and on the back of a fine first season in the Premier League with Wolverhampton Wanderers, the striker is enjoying a fine CONCACAF Gold Cup so far too. The 28 year old scored three times in the group stages, including a brace in the thumping win over Cuba, so we’re backing him to continue his rich vein of form in front of goal with another strike here at 13/10 with William Hill.
