Manchester City suffered a shock 2-0 defeat to Wolves in their last Premier League home match, but are not expected to have any such problems when they host their conquerors’ West Midlands rivals Aston Villa.
That loss is probably best attributed to being ‘one of those days’ that happen now and again to the best teams for City still had 76% possession, they just could not break down their opponents and were undone twice in the last 10 minutes on the counter-attack by the rapid Adama Traore.
But the champions have bounced back in style with victories over Crystal Palace and Atalanta, while the return to fitness of John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi means manager Pep Guardiola now has no real reason to play midfielders in the central defensive positions.
Aston Villa will travel north with the possible realisation that if this is another of the wide open, entertaining goalfests in which they have been involved over the course of their last five matches, it will not help them to get a positive result.
That sort of contest would surely only benefit City, so Villa manager Dean Smith and his assistant John Terry may well have been working this week on a plan to contain their hosts rather than going toe-to-toe with them.
Ultimately, though, you cannot see lightning striking in the same place as it did against Wolves and this is likely to be a straightforward, routine success that puts City within reach of Liverpool before the leaders face Tottenham on Sunday.
