It will be both sides’ first match in the new-look competition which, like its more illustrious sibling, the UEFA Champions League, will this season feature 36 teams competing across a single league phase.
Wednesday’s clash is scheduled to kick off at 8pm BST and will be broadcast live in the United Kingdom on TNT Sports 1 and TNT Sports Ultimate.
There is little doubt that Manchester United would have rather already played their first European match of the season in the Champions League last week.
However, the Red Devils were not good enough over the course of last season to finish in the top four and they needed to win the FA Cup to qualify for any continental competition at all.
Their Wembley success likely spared Erik ten Hag from the sack but a middling start to the new campaign has put the heat back on the Dutch manager.
United squandered a host of good chances in Saturday’s goalless draw at Crystal Palace and they are only 11th after five matches of the new Premier League season.
Opponents FC Twente have been much sharper in front of goal and moved up to fourth in the Eredivisie after dealing out a 5-0 thrashing to Almere City at the weekend.
Striker Sem Steijn scored twice in that rout to take his tally to seven for the season and he could prove a real threat to United’s rearguard, which will be missing long-term absentee Leny Yoro as well as full-backs Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia on Wednesday.
Man United vs FC Twente Tips
Tip 1
Manchester United’s wastefulness in front of goal at Selhurst Park is not the first time this season that they have failed to make the most of their chances.
Understat.com gives the Red Devils an expected-goals figure of 10.21 for their first five league games yet Ten Hag’s men have actually scored just five times, three of which came in the same game against Southampton.
Last week’s 7-0 rout of Barnsley in the EFL Cup third round is the only time they have displayed a clinical edge and that was also their only game this term to produce more than three goals.
The Red Devils are not conceding many goals themselves, though, so a bet on a home win and under 3.5 goals against FC Twente could be the best move.
Tip 2
England international Marcus Rashford started on the bench for Manchester United against Crystal Palace at the weekend but is a likely starter on Wednesday night.
Rashford had previously netted twice against Barnsley in the EFL Cup and also supplied United’s opener in their 3-0 Premier League success at Southampton.
He played in a central role against the Tykes and may do so again with Joshua Zirkzee potentially in line for a rest and Rasmus Hojland still working his way back after injury.
At 6/1, backing Rashford to open the scoring looks worth a small interest.
