Inter Milan vs Barcelona Match Preview
Inter Milan will be delighted that Barcelona have travelled without seven first-team players for this Champions League qualification decider – and Lionel Messi is among them.
With Barca having already clinched top spot in Group F, it is between Inter and Borussia Dortmund to join them in the knockout stage. From Inter’s perspective, the equation is very simple – win and they go through, but if they drop points and Dortmund beat Slavia Prague at home, it will be the Europa League round-of-32 instead for the Nerazzurri.
As this is a dead rubber for Barcelona, the bookmakers have stacked the odds very much in Inter’s favour (see below) – and the layers must have been aware that Ernesto Valverde would leave some important players at home.
Injured are Ousmane Dembele, Jordi Alba, Nelson Semedo and Arthur, while Messi, Gerard Pique and Sergi Roberto have remained back at base to prepare for three more La Liga matches before the Christmas break – against Real Sociedad, Alaves and, of course, El Clasico as Real Madrid visit Camp Nou next Wednesday.
Antonio Conte, the Inter coach, will have been delighted that his side scored two late goals to win away to Slavia Prague last time out in this competition to ensure their destiny is in their own hands heading into the group finale – as much as it can be when facing Barcelona anyway!
It’s tempting to think the Spanish champions represent terrific value here at 9/2, but their 20-man squad contains seven ‘B’ team players and if Valverde chooses to start several of them it would make life easier for a highly motivated Inter side.
