Huddersfield vs Derby Match Preview

Huddersfield are back in the Championship after two seasons in the Premier League the first of which brought saw great memories though the second was a real struggle finishing bottom with just 16 points.  Jan Siewert remains in charge having taken over mid-way through last campaign and he has lots of time to assess his squad and plan for this season.  Bookmakers think they are on for a reasonable campaign and have them as eighth favourites for the title.

At the John Smith’s Stadium, the Terriers need to improve having won just two times in 2018/19 which dropped from the six they achieved in 2017/18.  Last time they were in the Championship in 2016/17 they managed to win 15 of their 23 in front of their own fans.

Derby finished last season in sixth place before going on to defeat and Leeds and then losing to Aston Villa in the Championship play-off final.  Frank Lampard left the club to join Chelsea and replacing him in the dugout is highly thought of Dutchman Phillip Cocu.  Bookmakers think they were do okay and had them as ninth favourites for the title.

Away from Pride Park, the Rams won just seven times with seven of them finishing all-square and nine ending in defeat.  If they could turn a few of these draws into victories then they could be set to finish higher than their sixth place last season.

We think both these could be top-six contenders in the long-run but concerns about them both would put us off any match bets about them here.  Town won just once here last season so could be shaky while County are only really starting to get their act together in the transfer market so it might take time for the team to gel.

A better angle of approach is to try a couple of players bets and look at the anytime goalscorer market.  For the hosts we like Alex Pritchard who showed a few seasons back with Norwich (and prior to the Brentford) he can do well at this level and he looks over-priced here given that lead man Karlan Grant will occupy a lot of the defensive time.  For the road side, Jack Marriott gets the nod as a player who wasn’t used much by Lampard but impressed whenever he was asked and with a number of loan players departed will be given more to do this season.
