France vs Italy Tips

Tip 1

These two represent completely different propositions at the moment: Italy failed to make it beyond the first knockout phase at Euro 2024, while France came agonisingly close to participating in their third final at the last three major tournaments, failing to hold on to an early lead against eventual winners Spain.

The Italians didn’t cover themselves in glory whatsoever as defending champions in Germany. Luciano Spalletti’s side conceded the fastest goal in European Championship history after 23 seconds versus Albania, were toyed with against a Spain side who didn’t even have to get out of first gear to beat them without conceding, drew to an underwhelming Croatia team who exited at the group stage and concluded their journey by losing 2-0 to Switzerland.

France boss Didier Deschamps has faced Italy on three separate occasions during his 12-year reign over the national team, winning all three matches – a feat we expect him to extend on Friday.

Les Bleus kept four clean sheets from six fixtures at Euro 2024. Their success under Deschamps has been built on the foundations of a strong defence, which continues to be the case despite changes in personnel over the years.

Tip 2

Marcus Thuram has started the season incredibly well over in Serie A, netting four times from his opening three games, including netting a brace on two different occasions; his latest coming against Champions League participants Atalanta in Inter’s 4-0 romping.

Although he hasn’t set the world alight for his country yet – scoring just twice from 24 caps – there’s plenty of optimism towards the 27-year-old. Both of his international goals so far have come on home soil, while he’s almost reached a third of last season’s league goals tally for Internazionale by September, suggesting that if Deschamps gives him the proper treatment then Thuram can become the No.9 Les Bleus have yet to fill since Olivier Giroud announced his international retirement.

France Form, Team News & Predicted Line-Up

Although France have just one win from their last three matches, it’s important to note that their latest defeat came at the hands of Euro 2024 champions Spain, while a 0-0 draw with Portugal was followed up by a penalty shootout victory against A Selecao.

Didier Deschamps has largely entrusted his Euro 2024 squad for these forthcoming Nations League fixtures. Wesley Fofana has withdrawn from the squad due to fitness concerns, as has Ferland Mendy, who has been replaced by fellow left-back Lucas Digne, with Matteo Guendouzi providing additional midfield cover.

France Predicted XI: Maignan; Kounde, Saliba, Konate, Hernandez; Kante, Tchouameni, Zaire-Emeny; Dembele, Thuram, Mbappe.

Italy Form, Team News & Predicted Line-Up

The Azzurri are in somewhat troublesome form, holding only one win from their last five competitive matches, which came against FIFA’s 66th-ranked Albania. Conceding goals remains a worry for the Euro 2020 winners, having conceded 13 games in the last year, including a failure to register a single clean sheet during this summer’s tournament.

Italy will have to make do without striker Gianluca Scamacca after suffering a recent ACL injury. Nicolo Barella will also be absent for the foreseeable future as he undergoes sinus surgery. In total, there are eight absentees from the Italians’ Euros squad, with Gianluca Mancini and Jorginho two key figures to miss the cut.

Italy Predicted XI: Donnarumma; Di Lorenzo, Buongiorno, Bastoni; Cambiaso, Fagiolo, Frattesi, Dimarco; Pellegrini, Zaccagni; Rettegui.
