The teams had contrasting starts in this competition and will settle into battle at the Groupama Arena in Budapest with a 17:45 BST kick-off on Thursday, October 3rd for a game being shown live on TNT Sports 1 and Discovery+ in the UK.
Tottenham’s mood has certainly lifted since last month’s north London derby loss at home to Arsenal.
They’ve been close to a deepening sense of woe a few times – going behind in the EFL Cup at Coventry and at home to Brentford in the Premier League, while they had a player sent off after just eight minutes when Qarabag visited in this competition.
The Lilywhites won all three games, however, and on Sunday they dismissed Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford, a scoreline that was anything but flattering, even allowing for Bruno Fernandes getting himself sent off.
Ferencvaros were punished for a couple of defensive lapses as Anderlecht beat them 2-1 in Belgium on Matchday One.
Manager Pascal Jansen felt they ‘absolutely should not have lost’ that contest and will seek a response here, with his side easy 3-0 winners over second-placed Puskas Academy in the OTP Bank Liga since, making it six wins in six so far for the Hungarian champions.
Ferencvaros vs Tottenham Tips
Tip 1
Ferencvaros were a match for Anderlecht for long spells in their Europa League opener, but shipping two goals in six minutes just beyond the hour cost them.
Boss Jansen says he expects them to show up well at home and they have not lost any of their last six group stage games in the Europa or Conference Leagues over the previous two seasons, picking up three wins and three draws as teams like Monaco and Fiorentina failed to better them.
Adding to the notion that the Hungarians can get something, Spurs recent record on the road in Europe is far from inspiring.
In their last two campaigns – they were absent last season in Postecoglou’s first term – Tottenham have drawn two and lost five of eight games.
Postecoglou went fairly strong at home to Qarabag, but he did include the likes of Archie Gray, Ben Davies, Yves Bissouma, Lucas Bergvall and Radu Dragusin from the start – with the last-named upsetting the equilibrium when he got his marching orders early on.
More changes can be expected here and Spurs may not be quite as sharp as they were on Sunday. A point wouldn’t be any sort of disaster and they might have to settle for that.
Tip 2
Swedish teenager Lucas Bergvall was the unfortunate player last time as he was withdrawn just 12 minutes into his second start of the season, making way for Destiny Udogie after Spurs were reduced to 10 men.
The 19-year-old enjoyed a good pre-season and looks like a really good technician on the ball.
He was on the left of a midfield three against Qarabag and Postecoglou is very likely to allow him another start now after getting the final 15 minutes at Old Trafford.
He can pick a pass, has clever movement and ability and is a good shout to lay on a Tottenham goal.
