Everton vs Arsenal Match Preview
Saturday’s lunchtime Premier League match will be all about the new manager(s) sitting in the stands – as the caretaker bosses in charge aim to bow out from their roles with a victory.
Cameras will be trained on the Goodison Park stands looking for Carlo Ancelotti and Mikel Arteta to see if they are watching the teams they are set to take over this Christmas.
At the time of writing on Thursday evening, Ancelotti appeared closer to being confirmed by Everton, his appointment being quite a coup for the Merseysiders. They certainly need some inspiration after three consecutive failures in the hotseat, although that may be harsh on Sam Allardyce who did generate some improvement in his five-and-a-half months at the helm.
Arsenal’s choice is Arteta, but agreeing terms with Manchester City for him to leave has been a sticking point. Since Unai Emery’s departure, Freddie Ljungberg has won only one game out of five, but at least it was a Premier League away success, 3-1 at West Ham.
Duncan Ferguson has been keeping things ticking over at Everton and he will want the Toffees to reproduce their superb 3-1 home win over Chelsea on his managerial debut.
However, despite a creditable but ultimately fruitless comeback against Leicester in midweek, Everton do not appear to have made a dramatic improvement since Marco Silva’s exit and so the value here could be Arsenal to emulate the success they enjoyed at West Ham.
