The next few days will show Hansi Flick where his Barcelona side sits in the pecking order. First, they face his former club, Bayern Munich, before taking on Real Madrid in Saturday’s first El Clasico of the season.
Flick’s calming influence helped him guide Bayern to a Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and Champions League treble in 2019-20. Included in that run to the German club’s sixth European Cup was a remarkable 8-2 victory over Barca in this competition.

The first was a 3-2 victory in 2015, yet the Blaugrana had won the first leg 3-0 and went on to don their fifth and most recent Champions League crown, but the harrowing defeat in Lisbon seemingly sparked the chaos that has engulfed the club in recent years.
They have failed to score in the four meetings since then but that could change, with another Bayern hero of 2020 leading the line.
Robert Lewandowski’s 12 goals have propelled Barca to the top of La Liga and he will be excited to face his old colleagues, who are themselves top dogs domestically, albeit only ahead of RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga on goal difference.
The Allianz Arena club also appointed a new coach in the summer. Vincent Kompany oversaw an opening 9-2 win over Dinamo Zagreb, but has been accused of tactical naivety and was undone by Unai Emery in his team’s second Champions League game, a 1-0 defeat at Aston Villa.
Barca can match that record of a win and a defeat each – going down 2-1 to Monaco before beating Young Boys 5-0. Flick, too, has had some difficult moments, notably getting his rotation all wrong in the 4-2 defeat at Osasuna.
Still, the 59-year-old is among the sharpest minds in the game and could guide his team to glory.

Despite lingering reservations about their temporary home on Montjuic, Barcelona have recorded five wins from as many games at the ground this season at an aggregate of 20-1, most recently beating Sevilla 5-1 on Sunday.
That victory also featured Gavi’s return from almost a year out with a knee injury. He may get more minutes towards the end, but will not be unduly risked on Wednesday. Instead, Pedri will be charged with shaping the team and his extra control could give Barca an advantage.
Bayern’s results this season have been good, but they have become ragged against better opponents who have had the players to move them about and that weakness may be exposed again.

Lewandowski’s dozen league strikes have hit the headlines but he also netted twice in the win over Young Boys.
It feels inevitable that he will score against his former team. but at a relatively short price it might be worth adding in an assist for Joshua Kimmich.
Kimmich is still to consistently impress in midfield and, even with Joao Palhinha expected to start alongside him, he could continue to wander out of position, more down to a desire to have a positive impact than any tactical ill-discipline.
Injuries mean he may also be moved back into his least-favoured but arguably better-suited right-back role.
Either way, he should still be on corners and free-kicks and, with three assists already in the tournament, could record another goal involvement.
