Brief history of Ligue 1

France’s Ligue 1 is relatively young in comparison to some of its European neighbours. Professional league football has only existed in the nation since 1930, and Ligue 1 in its current format has only existed since 2002.

The first iteration of the league took place in 1932-33, with 20 teams from across the country competing for title glory. The National, as it was then known, saw Olympique Lillois crowned champions after a hard-fought 4-3 battle against Cannes.

French football was put on hold during the war years, with any remaining teams competing in regional leagues restricted to a few semi-professional matches against local neighbours.

The league was reinstated as France recovered following liberation from Nazi occupation and in the mid-60s was re-established as a 20-team competition.

AS Saint-Étienne dominated the mid-20^th century, racking up ten titles until 1981. Les Verts’ ten championships is still a national record, though mega-rich Paris Saint-Germain are hot on their heels.
