Betting tips for the 2019-20 League One season in which Sunderland are favourites to win the title after being beaten in the play-off final last term.

League One Promotion Tips

Sunderland and Portsmouth are unsurprisingly heading the bookmakers’ lists to be promoted from League One after both of these ‘fallen giants’ narrowly missed out last season.

Pompey were the best team in the third tier until losing their way after the turn of the year and eventually they were beaten in their play-off semi-final by Sunderland – who then suffered the heartbreak of losing to Charlton at Wembley with virtually the last kick before extra time.

They both look sure to be up there fighting for the title again, but a new threat to them has emerged in the shape of Ipswich Town who find themselves down in the third tier for the first time since 1956-57.

Far from being ‘too good to go down’ last term, Ipswich simply never got going after the managerial appointment of Paul Hurst as replacement for Mick McCarthy did not work out, but they now have a proven League One operator in charge in Paul Lambert.

The Scot was unable to keep the Tractor Boys in the Championship, but he knows what he is doing at this level having got Ipswich’s arch-rivals Norwich promoted and the Suffolk club look decent value at 9/4 with Coral.

As an outsider, there are worse bets to be had than Doncaster Rovers, 8/1 at bet365. They took Charlton to a penalty shootout in the play-off semi-finals last season and although manager Grant McCann has moved on to Hull City, his successor Darren Moore looks a shrewd choice as he had done little wrong at West Brom before his harsh sacking in March.

League One Relegation Tips

This is a more difficult market than usual because local rivals Bury and Bolton Wanderers are both starting the season with 12-point deductions due to their perilous financial states.

Bolton look to have more potential of the duo to overcome that penalty, but essentially you have to bet as though it will be any two from the remaining 22 clubs to go down.

Last season, it was an incredibly tight relegation scrap and remarkably, three clubs who had finished in the top half of the table the previous season ended up being relegated.

However, there is one particularly appealing bet this time in Southend United at 4/1 with Paddy Power after they survived only on goal difference last term following a 2-1 final-day home victory over Sunderland.

Credit and respect to Kevin Bond for keeping the Shrimpers up after his appointment in early April, but this is his first Football League management job since 2008 and the Essex club’s squad does not look strong enough.

League One Top Goalscorer Tips

On the basis that we like Ipswich’s chances of being promoted, the signing of James Norwood is one positive factor and we can see him scoring the goals that send the Tractor Boys straight back up – he is 8/1 with bet365 to be League One top goalscorer.

The fiery former Forest Green and Tranmere striker looks ready for this level after scoring 30 goals in League Two last season, helping the Merseyside club to be promoted via the play-offs – so he would have been playing in this division even if he had stayed put.

Norwood’s physicality means he should have no problem holding his own against League One defenders and despite not exactly being a youngster as he will turn 29 in October, he still looks to have some potential in him yet to make his mark in a higher echelon such as this.
