Donny van de Beek could form part of an exodus from Champions League semi-finalists Ajax this summer…but which club will he join?
Ajax were the surprise package of last season’s Champions League, drawing hordes of new admirers as they knocked out holders Real Madrid and then Juventus in the knockout stage before getting within seconds of also taking Tottenham Hotspur’s scalp to reach the final.
Inevitably, with such a young team including several talents they nurtured themselves, there has been huge interest in the Amsterdam club’s players and midfielder Frenkie de Jong has long since had a move to Barcelona this summer in the bag.
Matthijs de Ligt is set to follow De Jong out of the Netherlands, probably to Juventus, and others could also head for the exit door, in particular midfielder Donny van de Beek.
A 22-year-old who has been with Ajax for 11 years, Van de Beek entered the first-team picture in 2015 and is now establishing himself in the Netherlands senior side which this summer finished runners-up in the UEFA Nations League.
So which clubs are expected to be interesting in signing him this summer? Well, Real Madrid are reportedly looking for a midfielder to complete a huge spending spree and while their first target is said to be Paul Pogba, they could come calling for Van de Beek if that move fails.
Real certainly know what the Dutchman can do because he played all 180 minutes of Ajax’s 5-3 aggregate success against them in the Champions League round-of-16.
Paris Saint-Germain are another club needing reinforcements in midfield and as it looks like they have missed out on centre-half De Ligt, they could be keen to stage an alternative raid on Ajax for Van de Beek.
Or what about a move to England? Tottenham Hotspur are understood to still be in the market for midfielders despite signing Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon, while Manchester United may be keen if they lose Pogba to Real Madrid.
