FA Cup Predictions

So, the question at the start of each FA Cup campaign is who is going to end up winning it? For most people, interest in the FA Cup begins with the third round in January when English Premier League and Championship sides enter the competition. The 'genuine' FA Cup begins with the 'First Round Proper' in which League One and League Two sides enter, but the qualifying stages of the FA Cup commence for non-league teams far earlier than that!

Predicting the winners of the FA Cup has always been something of a lottery as the best sides do not always win it or even reach the final. Several second tier sides have won the competition in living memory, including Sunderland (1973), Southampton (1976) and West Ham (1980). On each occasion the second tier side beat a top flight side (namely, Leeds United, Manchester United and Arsenal).

With the top teams also resting their best players for FA Cup ties many matches are becoming harder than ever to predict. This means that you'll get better odds for such ties than you would if they were league games.

FA Cup Betting Tips & Previews

Here at Football Tips we are proud to bring you the best betting tips available for all FA Cup ties, right from the rounds that really matter. Our betting previews cannot be bettered anywhere else as we try and make them as useful and as accurate as possible.

We have to keep our ears really close to the ground when it comes to information about FA Cup ties, especially when it comes to team selection. Despite the UK public still loving cup football, the leading football bosses would much rather concentrate on league position and the chances of qualifying for the cash-laden UEFA Champions League than the FA Cup.

This ancient cup competition is quintessentially a British thing – similar cup competitions such as the Copa del Rey ('the King's Cup') in Spain simply do not attract the same levels of interest in their native lands as the FA Cup does in England and Wales.

As a result 'shocks' can happen, such as League One Wigan Athletic beating the all-conquering Manchester City in 2018. You can really cash in on the odds offered by sports books when upsets are likely, and our previews are aimed to help you do just that.

When is the FA Cup?

While most people do not have much interest in the FA Cup until the third round, each season's competition actually begins extremely early on in the season. Over seven hundred clubs enter the FA Cup each season, so there are plenty of ties for you to wager upon throughout the entire cup campaign.

FA Cup ties generally start in August each year, with the lowest ranked non-league sides drawn against each other. Depending on the number of clubs that enter the competition the initial round draw can be made as early as July!

There are thirty-two places available to non-league clubs in the first round proper, and qualifying ties continue until that number of sides remain in the competition. The forty-eight teams in League One and League Two enter the competition at this stage to create forty-ties that are usually played at the beginning of November.

The third round proper sees the entry of all forty-four Premier League and Championship sides. There are twenty sides surviving from the second round to make up the full compliment of sixty-four surviving teams. Third round ties usually take place in January.

From the third round it's a straight knock-out competition, via the fourth round (late January), fifth round (mid February), sixth round (mid March) and the semi finals (mid April) right up to the final itself in May.

Where can I find the best FA Cup betting tips?

As we've mentioned before, it is getting harder and harder to predict FA Cup ties and to give accurate and reliable FA Cup tips, but we sincerely do our best! Several times in recent seasons managers have been criticised for putting out second string sides in the early rounds of the FA Cup – for example in 2018 Arsenal's Arsene Wenger was condemned for the team he put out in the third round against second-tier Nottingham Forest.

Arsenal were the FA Cup holders at the time and were beaten four-two by a Forest side that hadn't won a game for a month.

If we have an inkling that a top team is about to give a few reserves a run out as a tie is not seen as being much of a priority, then we'll align our expectations accordingly, and you can make some extra cash as online bookmakers are likely to be a little too generous with the odds they give.

More mundane ties are much easier to predict, and we give as much consideration to all aspects of each tie as we do to all our league game previews.

When do you publish match predictions?

We make sure that we get our predictions in as early as possible, but not too early. Such is the plethora of sports books available on the internet that you'll never be short of a site at which you can place a bet, so you'll be able to place a bet literally seconds before the event you want to wager upon starts.

We generally publish our predictions one to two days before the event takes place, but we always react to any new information that we find and keep our predictions up to date. Football managers are usually candid about many aspects of the game, such as players being rested or injured, and such news can really de-rail the likely outcome of any particular tie.

The last thing we want you to do is treat our earliest predictions as gospel, place your bets and then forget about them. Most sports books will allow you to cash out your bet in full before the event takes place in case you change your mind, so that's not necessarily a worry, but we certainly don't publish our tips until they're as reliable as we feel they need to be.
