What is a football accumulator?

Essentially, an accumulator – or ‘acca’ as most people refer to them for convenience – is a bet where several selections are combined and the odds multiplied to calculate the eventual payout.

There is no limit to the number of selections but you will need to get them all correct for your bet to be a winner – although there may be a consolation offered by the bookmaker for a near miss, usually in the form of your stake being refunded as a free bet.

For instance, if you backed Arsenal, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Barcelona all to win and they were all at individual odds of 2/1, and you slapped a £10 accumulator bet on, then you would be looking at returns of over £800!

Win accumulator tips

A 'win' accumulator is probably the simplest type of sports betting accumulator there is. To set up a win accumulator you just need to find four football matches you like the look of and select the winners in each game.

With any type of accumulator the winnings from your first selection (and your original stake returned) are placed on the second selection, and so on down the line. It doesn't matter the order in which your selections are linked in this way – as long as all your selections come in, your total winnings will always be the same no matter how you work it out.

BTTS accumulators tips

'BTTS' stands for 'both teams to score', and is another hugely popular type of acca wager, alongside the simple win/draw/win selections.

With a single BTTS bet you are betting on both teams to score during the game. This is one of the most advantageous types of bet as it stays alive right up until the final whistle, and as soon as both teams have scored then your bet's a winner no matter what else might happen during the rest of the game.

A BTTS acca will typically offer bigger returns than a standard win accumulator.

Weekend accumulator tips

It seems there is a football match every day of the week, every week of the year in this modern day and age, but the majority of football still takes place on Saturday and Sunday. Traditionally, a full schedule of league or cup matches in England, Scotland, France and Germany takes place on the Saturday, but in Spain and Italy you are more likely to see the majority of games played on a Sunday.

We specialise in weekend accumulators here at FootballTips. We'll analyse the playing schedule for both Saturday and Sunday and pick out a minimum of four selections that we think are the most likely to return you cash.

What are the advantages of accumulator betting?

This can be summed up very easily…big returns for small stakes! It really is a case of ‘fortune favours the brave’.

Anyone can pick a winner but getting four, five, six etc all together is much more difficult. It’s a bit like seeing how many times you can call ‘heads or tails’ correctly in succession and knowing by which point you’re pushing your luck to risk getting it wrong.

Of course, with football accas there is more skill, judgement and knowledge involved and if you can put all of those attributes to good use, there is the potential to win huge sums of money for an outlay just a fraction of what you would need to place a similarly rewarding single bet.

How can I pick a winning acca bet?

If you are new to accumulator bets, the key at first is probably not to be too bold. Perhaps just try a handful of selections, say three or four, to give yourself a realistic chance of winning.

And among those three or four should be at least a couple of favourites, and probably odds-on shots which are very likely to be winners. It is always worth bearing in mind that you need to get all of your picks right for it to yield a return, so keep the risks to a minimum.

Once you have got a couple of winning ‘accas’ under your belt and have some profit to play with, you can then start to be a little braver – and you will also have more experience of which selections tend to work and which do not.
