2018-19 Scottish Premiership Preview

When it comes the time to consider who will win the Scottish Premiership each season, the first question to ask is whether it is worth looking beyond Celtic. Last term, the men in green and white hoops won their seventh title on the bounce and it is hard to see them failing to make it eight this time around.

Brendan Rodgers will try again to focus on the Champions League, hoping Celtic will do better this year than that 7-1 hammering at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain, as well as crashing out of the Europa League after one tie in the knockout stage. Celtic still need players better than they already have but will be boosted by the return of Johnny Hayes, whose 2017-18 season ended on Boxing Day due to injury.

The main focus in the Scottish Premiership – initially at least – is on Rangers' audacious appointment of Steven Gerrard as manager. The last time such an event happened in Scotland was when Celtic appointed John Barnes as boss, a move that ended in disaster. Gerrard has Gary McAllister as his assistant but it's a huge gamble by the Ibrox club no matter how you look at it.

Of the 'also rans' Aberdeen, Hibernian and Hearts are doing all they can to prevent Celtic from running away with things, but neither have the financial clout of the Glasgow boys and will likely have to be content with a fight for the runners-up spot. At the other end, newcomers St Mirren will have their work cut out having lost manager Jack Ross to Sunderland, and expect struggles too for Livingston, Hamilton and St Johnstone.

SPL predictions

The Scottish top flight features 12 clubs and has existed in its current format since July 2013. Dominated by Celtic, who have lifted every title since its formation, the league is perhaps best known for the famous Old Firm derby between Celtic and Rangers, a rivalry that goes far deeper than football.
