Champions League Betting Tips

Champions League predictions, tips and previews are among the most straightforward to produce on because the matches are entirely separate entities to the fixtures that clubs play in their own countries.

It’s not like in domestic competitions where what happens in one game will inevitably influence the odds for the next. As teams are facing opponents from different nations in the Champions League, the odds tend to remain fairly static until betting activity ramps up in the day or two before the match.

Therefore, it allows us to take a view earlier about what is likely to happen in a Champions League game and you can often find our previews available perhaps four or five days before the fixture takes place.

This is especially true during the group stage and perhaps even more so in the knockout phase, especially as the latter takes place later in the season, from February through to May, when the form is less volatile than earlier in the campaign and you have a good idea about what each team is capable of.

We always ensure the information and odds we provide are as up to date as possible, although sometimes during the group stage we may not be able to publish some of the previews for the lower-profile fixtures until the day beforehand due to the sheer volume of games taking place.

What are the best Champions League bets?

It literally can be anything, because our philosophy is that a winner is a winner! If it makes a profit, does it really matter?

But in saying that, we know that most people like to bet on the outcome of a match, whether it will be a home win, away win or draw, and whenever possible that is what we tip.

Of course, we could predict the winner of any game, but some Champions League fixtures can be very one-sided when, for instance, one of the big guns faces a qualifier at home, and the odds can sometimes be as short as 1/10. In that situation, you have to look to the peripheral markets.

Occasionally, we think a hot favourite is worth opposing and that is when the Double Chance market (a team to win or draw) comes into play if an upset looks to be on the cards.

Otherwise, we will consider Both Teams To Score, Over/Under goals, Handicap betting, First/Last Goalscorer, Double Result (half-time/full-time) and even Correct Score on the matches that look to have an inevitable outcome.

In the knockout stage, when a tie looks fairly well balanced, we will also look at the To Qualify market before the first leg if we have formulated a view that one team in particular is well set to advance to the next round.

How reliable are your Champions League predictions?

That’s the $64,000 question! Like we’ve said above, this can be one of the best competitions to bet on and we certainly give 100% to finding the best Champions League bets and are confident we can at the very least match any other tipster out there.

One of the things to be wary of is towards the end of the group stage when teams may have already qualified. Come November/December time, teams are right in the thick of their domestic campaigns and may have big league games coming up. Managers have been known to make vast changes to their Champions League line-ups at this point if their fate is already known.

One thing that can boost the profit margins for punters is backing wide-margin scorelines in the Champions League when one of the top teams is hosting an opponent much less experienced in the competition. There have been numerous examples of 5-0 and 6-0 results as some teams are just not used to such an intense atmosphere and playing in front of very large crowds.

For that reason, Over 2.5 Goals will often feature among our recommended bets on Champions League games and To Win To Nil is another popular option.

When is the Champions League?

The UEFA Champions League is the most prestigious club competition in world football, contested by the best current teams from around Europe.

There are three distinct sections to a Champions League campaign. Firstly, qualifying matches take place in July and August, initially for the European ‘minnows’ who try to earn the right to face their more powerful rivals as the competition progresses.

Then, from September through to December, the group stage takes place. Many teams have direct entry into the group stage and are joined by the qualifiers, with 32 clubs divided into eight groups of four. They play each other at home and away and the top two in each final table advance.

Those 16 remaining clubs contest the knockout stage, meeting in two-legged ties, until two are left and meet in a one-off showdown for the trophy at a pre-determined venue.

Real Madrid are easily the most successful club in European Cup/Champions League history, well ahead of AC Milan, with Liverpool heading the English contingent. The Spanish giants remarkably were European champions for the first five years in a row and in 2017, they became the first team to retain the Champions League title as they lifted the trophy for a third time in four years.
