Football card betting is where you bet on the number of cards shown to players during a game. You can usually bet on the number of cautions (yellow cards), dismissals (red cards) and cautions & dismissals combined (red and yellow cards). Similar to goals scored during the game, you wager upon over/under there being 2.5 cards shown during the game. There are other ways you can bet on the number of cards shown, both in total and by individual team, but over/under 2.5 is the most common method. How you choose to bet on the number of cards shown during a game is of course up to you.
With red card betting you are simply betting on the number of red cards shown during the game – either to both sides, or to one side in particular. The number of red cards includes any ‘double yellow card’ dismissals, i.e. where a player is send off after receiving two cautions.
With yellow card betting you are wagering upon the number of players whom receive a caution during a match, either for both sides or for one of the teams involved. The total of yellow cards shown includes occasions where a player receives two cards for two individual offences and is subsequently dismissed, although some sports books count this as one red card and one yellow card – check the site’s terms and conditions. Note: Some sports books have a betting system where you bet on ‘booking points’ rather than the number of cards shown. Generally, a yellow card earns ten points and a record card twenty-five points.
Obviously, some teams are more aggressive than others, and some games are more likely to draw a high number of cards – such as local derbies. Some players also receive a high number of bookings, not because they are particularly ‘dirty’ but because their position necessitates them to make a high number of defensive tackles, such as defensive midfielders. If a defensive midfielder with a high booking count is up against an opposition player who’s adept at dribbling and skipping tackles, than that’s a sure sign of a potential booking.
With a first booking bet you are betting on the team that will have the player that is shown a yellow card first. Teams with high totals of cards against teams with low totals of cards are always good to back in this respect. You can also wager upon no cards being shown at all, or the team that will have a player shown a card first, whether it is red or yellow.
With this bet you are simply backing ‘yes’ or ‘no’ that a player will have a player booked during the course of the match. Note that a red card does not count as a booking in this regard, but you can back a team to be shown a card, irrespective of its colour.
For the bigger games (i.e. those games in the top league levels of leading football-playing nations) you will be able to receive odds of any individual player being booked (or sent off) during the game. Be aware that if such odds are not given by your chosen bookmaker regarding a match, then you can contact the sport book directly to see if they will offer you a price on the player you want to back to receive a booking.
