Wolves vs Reading Match Preview
Wolves have yet to win a domestic match this season but can divert a little of the pressure building on manager Nuno Espirito Santo by beating Reading in the Carabao Cup.
Competing in the Europa League, firstly the qualifiers and now the group stage, has evidently had an impact on Wolves. Their Premier League results so far have been nowhere near the same level as those that carried them to a fantastic seventh place last term.
They breezed through the Europa League qualifiers but had it not been for a couple of equalisers deep into stoppage time that salvaged a point against Burnley and Crystal Palace, the situation would have been even more worrying for Nuno regarding his security in the job.
But this Carabao Cup third-round tie is an opportunity to start turning the tide as Wolves make their bow in this season’s competition. Their opponents are also on a current poor run of form with three consecutive defeats in the Championship, two of those at home.
Also with a Portuguese manager in Jose Gomes, Reading have advanced to this round by coming through two ties away to lower-division opponents, Wycombe and Plymouth, and they needed to win a penalty shootout in the first of those.
Nuno does not have the largest squad to rotate, but he is well used to having to prepare for two matches a week as he has been doing that ever since the Premier League campaign began – and he is expected to send out a team that gets the job done here without too much fuss.
