Wolverhampton Wanderers are back in Europe for the first time since they were beaten by PSV Eindhoven in the first round of the UEFA Cup back in 1980/1981. Prior to that, the men in gold had been regulars in Europe, even reaching a final in 1972, where they lost to fellow English outfit Tottenham Hotspur. It’s been a difficult few years since then for the Black Country outfit but they return to Europe on Thursday night after a magnificent 7th placed finish in the Premier League last season. Nuno Espirito Santo’s men did incredibly well in their first season back in the Premier League and with the financial backing that they have, Wolves will be looking to continue progressing in the upcoming years. After winning the Asia Premier League Trophy, preparation for this tie against Northern Irish outfit Crusaders could hardly have gone any better and the odds suggest an easy home win here (1/25 with Unibet). Crusaders have been one of the better sides in Northern Ireland’s Danske Bank Premiership in recent years, lifting the domestic title three times in the last five seasons and they ended a ten year wait to lift the cup last season despite slipping down to fourth in the league table. They’ll be hoping to return to the top of the table this year but for now, focus remains on progressing in Europe as far as possible having never before managed to reach the group stages of the competition. The Crues have enjoyed a productive pre-season, winning three and drawing one of their four friendly fixtures and they cruised by B36 Torshavn in the first round of qualifying too by a 5-2 aggregate scoreline. Given the margin of victory in their two previous European ties against English opposition in Fulham and Liverpool, an away win seems highly unlikely hence odds of 100/1 from William Hill.
