Wigan vs Stoke Match Preview
Wigan host Stoke for their League Cup clash looking to bounce from a disappointing trip to Preston and a 3-0 league loss over the weekend, where they conceded an early opener and struggled to cope – failing to beat Declan Rudd and seeing the rivals dominate though most of the contest.
Latics have been more confident at home ground and will now hope to use such a momentum, where they beat Cardiff City (3-2) in a five-goal thriller just beforehand. Goals from Jacobs, Windass, and Evans brought all three points and now gives Paul Cook’s men a lot to build on as they look to make it through to the 2nd Round.
Stoke come into the match with a loss of their own and it’s two in a row as they see a horror start of the new campaign despite some narrow clashes along the way, where both Queens Park Rangers (1-2) and Charlton Athletic (3-1) secured the Championship points in early August.
Potters have been scoring goals but obviously struggled to impress defensively, conceding eight in last four outings. They will now hope they can shake it off and put on more of a challenge at DW Stadium but the records here feel far from reassuring either, last win coming back in 2005.
We don’t feel Stoke are up to the task now either and we don’t see them causing an upset. We’ll thus back Wigan to make their way to the next round with a win priced at 2/1 with bet365, which looks like a generous pick at this point.
We should be in for goals and both sides’ struggles to keep it together at the back suggest just that. This has us going for goals both ends with a Yes on Both teams to score, which caught the eye of many in the know and can be backed at 3/4 with Coral.
