West Ham vs Southampton Match Preview
West Ham may not be able to break into European football this year but they’ll be fairly happy with how things have gone under Mauricio Pellegrini in his first season in charge of the club. The former Manchester City man has brought in some exciting players and although there have been peaks and troughs within the season it can be seen as a progressive campaign, particularly if his side finishes in the top half which they can still do.
Having looked like they could compete with the likes of Wolves and Watford for a spot in the Europa League until recently, the Hammers had gone four games without a win and picked up just one point from an available 12 until last weekend. A Michail Antonio goal was enough to hand the visitors all three points and become the first away team to win at the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, can they follow that up with another win here at 11/8 with Bet365.
Southampton secured their Premier League status for at least another year with a home draw against fellow south coast outfit Bournemouth over the weekend. The Saints only managed to secure survival late in the campaign last year, but Mark Hughes wasn’t able to continue in a similar vein of form this season and with the team struggling for form, the Welshman was sacked in December and replaced with Austrian boss Ralph Hassenhuttl.
Instilling a more positive approach, Hassenhuttl has led his side to some much improved form over the last few months and as such the gap between themselves and the bottom three, following Cardiff City’s defeat at already-relegated Fulham last weekend, has been extended to seven points with just two games remaining. Now with the pressure off can they pick up a first ever win at the London Stadium at odds of 15/8 with PaddyPower?
We’re backing goals here. That match against Bournemouth for the Saints finished 3-3 and indeed goals have been a prominent feature of their matches of late, with both teams scoring in their last five Premier League matches. West Ham haven’t failed to score in any of their last three games and will want to finish the season with a flurry – we think the home advantage will carry them to the three points but the result and both teams to score market looks like good value at 3/1 with Bet365.
Shane Long is one of the most in-form strikers in the Premier League at the moment. The Republic of Ireland international has struggled for consistency in front of goal in recent years but has broken the record for the fastest ever Premier League goal just two weeks ago and he’s actually scored four of his five Premier League goals this season in his last five games so we’re backing him for another here at 21/10 with PaddyPower.
