Watford vs Chelsea Match Preview
Chelsea’s run of a magnificent seven straight wins came to an end in midweek, but they are expected to bounce back by winning away to the Premier League’s bottom club Watford.
The Blues fielded a less experienced team than visitors Manchester United in Wednesday’s Carabao Cup tie and while they still gave a good account of themselves, they were ultimately beaten by one of the best free-kicks you could wish to see from Marcus Rashford.
Frank Lampard is sure to recall the likes of Cesar Azpilicueta, Fikayo Tomori, Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham here and they will be confident of piling on the misery for a Watford team who have not won in the league since April 20 – and even then only against a Huddersfield side that was relegated with just 16 points.
Watford must now be wondering whether they made a mistake in swiftly sacking Javi Gracia after only four league games this term because Quique Sanchez Flores, in his second spell with the club, has generated little improvement from the same group of players.
It is largely the same Hornets squad that reached last season’s FA Cup Final and was in the top half of the table for much of the campaign, so on paper they look too good to go down – but you would never know that from their results this time around.
In fairness, Watford have drawn their last three league games. But without injured Troy Deeney they simply do not score enough goals – and that is not something you can say about Chelsea, who are backed to make it five Premier League victories on the spin.
