Wales vs Belarus Match Preview
Wales manager Ryan Giggs could choose to run the rule over some fresh young talent at senior international level when his side host Belarus in a friendly match on Monday.
With a night off from Euro 2020 qualifying duty because they are in a group with an odd number of teams, Wales have taken the opportunity to gain match practice against a nation they have not faced for 18 years.
The clash with Azerbaijan on Friday (result not known at the time of writing) was obviously the more important commitment as it will have influenced the Dragons’ prospects of reaching next summer’s tournament, but this is also a valuable exercise in terms of personnel.
In his squad of 26, Giggs called up four uncapped players in Swansea defender Joe Rodon, midfield duo Joe Morrell (Lincoln) and Dylan Levitt (Manchester United) and Wigan striker Kieffer Moore, plus seven others with no more than half a dozen appearances apiece.
For Belarus, too, this trip serves a useful purpose as they have a new manager in Mikhail Markhel, who has worked his way up coaching the country’s international age-group teams and presided over his first senior game away to Estonia on Friday.
With home advantage, Wales will expect to win this game but the likely ‘revolving door’ nature of their line-up on the night means it will probably not be a one-sided contest.
