Barcelona have turned what proved a narrow city derby against Espanyol (2-0) their way with two late goals from Leo Messi, now travelling for their mid-week clash in Villarreal on the back of a four-match winning streak across competitions.

Blaugrana have impressed as they knocked out Lyon (5-1) in Champions League as well as beat Rayo Vallecano (3-1) and Real Betis (1-4) in La Liga along the way, which should have them very motivated to keep up such a streak. They have struggled to keep clean sheets and this could feel more worrying for Ernesto Valverde, despite a ten-point gap behind at the top of the table.

Villarreal have, on the other hand, seen Celta Vigo bag all three points in a five-goal thriller at Abanca-Balaidos on Saturday and now have the rivals breathing down their necks once again in an exciting battle for top-flight survival. They thus sit just a point above the relegation zone and doing damage against the pace-setters will be a crucial task.

Yellow Submarine have been scoring numbers of goals on the regular and the sinking in Vigo only ended a four-streak winning streak, where they beat Zenit twice in Europa League and snatched points against Levante (0-2) and Rayo Vallecano (3-1).
