VfB Stuttgart have improved considerably for a change of manager just over a month ago and are expected to retain their place in the German top flight at the expense of Union Berlin.

Markus Weinzierl, who had only been appointed in October, paid the price for a poor run of results culminating in a 6-0 defeat to Augsburg, and was replaced on an interim basis by Nico Willig from the club’s academy staff.

Willig has tightened up Stuttgart defensively and although they have suffered one defeat under him, 3-1 at Hertha Berlin, they shut out their other three opponents and have won both home games to nil since the reshuffle.

They still have to contest the relegation play-off, however, against a Union Berlin side who finished third in the 2.Bundesliga behind Cologne and Paderborn and only missed out on automatic promotion on goal difference.

If Union had scored a late winner away to Bochum on Sunday having fought back from 2-0 down against 10 men, they would have gone up because Paderborn lost 3-1 to Dynamo Dresden.

However, that looks to have been their best chance because Stuttgart are no longer performing like a team destined for relegation and they are backed to gain a comfortable success that will stand them in good stead for the return match.
