On-loan Derby County striker Nick Blackman gave Sporting Gijon an advantage to take to Valencia for this return match, but it may not be enough for his side to reach the Copa del Rey quarter-finals.

Blackman scored 11 minutes from the end after Noblejas had put Gijon ahead only for Kevin Gameiro to equalise just before half-time.

It gives Gijon, who were relegated from the Primera Division two seasons ago after their latest top-flight spell lasted just a couple of years, a chance of adding Valencia to the scalp of Eibar they have claimed in their Copa del Rey run this term.

Currently in Segunda Division mid-table, Jose Alberto’s side have plenty on their plate, however, if they are to hang on to their lead against a Valencia team who have started to win much more regularly at home since the start of November compared to earlier in the season.
