Valencia vs Atalanta Predictions

Valencia’s season has taken a turn for the worse in recent weeks. Los Che appeared to be keeping within touching distance of Barcelona and Real Madrid at the top of the table until the last month or so, but a run of poor results has seen them slip down to seventh position and get knocked out of the Copa Del Rey by Granada – whilst their Champions League hopes now hang in the balance after a 4-1 defeat in the first leg of this clash with Atalanta.

A run of five games without a win in all competitions finally came to an end on Saturday for Celades’ men as they ground out a narrow 2-1 home win over Real Betis to keep their hopes of finishing in the Champions League spots alive. As for their hopes of remaining in this year’s edition of the competition, they’re pretty slim – with qualification available at 11/1 and even the win in this game at 7/5 with PaddyPower.

Atalanta’s hopes of a Serie A title tilt this season appear to have fizzled out somewhat as they remain 14 points off current leaders Lazio with 13 league fixtures of the campaign remaining. La Dea however continue to impress in the Champions League, having mounted a stunning comeback in the group stages and now having amassed a three goal lead ahead of the second leg of this Round of 16 tie against Valencia.

Hopes of another top four finish hang in the balance as Gian Piero Gasperini’s sit just three points clear of Roma in the final qualification spot, but attention has to be on this trip to the Mestalla now as they look to continue the kind of form that has seen them go seven games unbeaten in all competitions. Perhaps surprisingly given how the first leg went, the Italians are outsiders here at odds of 7/4 with William Hill.

We can see this one fizzling out into a draw. Valencia have to come forward to try and come from behind in the tie, but Atalanta have the quality to pick them off on the break and as such, we expect the two sides to cancel each other out in this game for a draw at odds of 14/5 with BetVictor.

Despite now being 32 years old, Josip Ilicic is the key component of his Atalanta attack. The Slovenian scored in the first leg in Bergamo and has now racked up no fewer than 17 goals in all competitions this season so we’re backing him to get on the scoresheet at any time in Spain.
