Uruguay vs Peru Predictions
Uruguay haven’t managed to make it as far as the semi-finals since they last won the Copa America back in 2011. With a host of key players like Diego Godin and the formidable striking partnership of Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani starting to come to the end of their careers, they may see this tournament as their last realistic opportunity to win some more silverware with their country alongside that 2011 win.
After kicking off the tournament with a thumping 4-0 victory over Ecuador, los Charruas will have been disappointed to have been held to a 2-2 draw with an inexperienced Japan side in their second fixture. Oscar Tabarez’s men were able to recover to end the group stages with seven points though as they battled to a 0-1 victory over Chile on Tuesday. They’re favourites to win this one too at odds of 4/6 with William Hill.
Peru won the hearts of the footballing world at last summer’s World Cup with their vociferous support and attacking style of play. Unfortunately for the Incas, things didn’t go their way and they were knocked out in the group stages after defeats to Denmark and France. Now, they’re hoping the momentum from that performance in Russia can inspire them to end a 40 year wait to get their hands on the Copa America trophy again.
It wasn’t exactly plain sailing for Ricardo Gareca’s men in the group stages though. Four points from their opening two games following a draw with Venezuela and a win over Bolivia were enough to secure progression but a lack of quality was seriously shown up in the 5-0 defeat to Brazil to end the group stages. Can they recover from that humiliating defeat and cause a shock in Salvador at 5/1 with PaddyPower.
Uruguay’s two forwards may get the majority of the praise and attention but at the back they are as strong as they’ve ever been with the Atletico Madrid centre-back pairing of Jose Gimenez and Diego Godin. In the group stages, Charruas managed to keep two clean sheets in three games, whilst Peru failed to score in two of their three games, which is why we’re backing Uruguay to win this one to nil at 7/5 with Coral.
Edinson Cavani was the man to eventually break down Chile in that final group stage game and he also got on the scoresheet in the 4-0 win over Ecuador to open the tournament. The PSG man now has no fewer than 48 international goals to his name and we’re backing him to increase that tally with another in this game at odds of 7/5 with PaddyPower.
