United States vs Mexico Match Preview
Mexico tend to have the edge on the United States when they meet in competitive fixtures, but in friendly matches it’s different and this could be a turnaround from the CONCACAF Gold Cup Final in July.
These countries met in Chicago for the showdown to decide who would be the North and Central American champions this time around and Mexico won 1-0 with a goal from Jonathan dos Santos.
El Tri have generally fared the better of the duo in the Gold Cup and also World Cup qualifiers over the past decade, though not in friendlies and you have to go all the way back to 1984 to find the latest time Mexico beat the USA in a truly non-competitive match.
In fairness, what should be mentioned here is that Mexico manager Gerardo Martino has named a more familiar-looking squad here than his opposite number Gregg Berhalter as every member of his triumphant Gold Cup squad has been included.
However, what should also be factored in is that the Mexicans also play Argentina on Tuesday, so it would be no surprise if some big names such as Raul Jimenez, Javier Hernandez, Hirving Lozano, Hector Herrera et al were rested here for that test in San Antonio, Texas.
Berhalter, meanwhile, will hope for big things from Chelsea playmaker Christian Pulisic and Schalke prospect Weston McKennie and with that excellent record against Mexico in friendlies, the Stars and Stripes look decent value to sneak a narrow win in East Rutherford.
