United States vs Ecuador Match Preview

Gregg Berhalter has made a perfect start to his tenure as United States head coach and aims to make it three wins out of three against Ecuador.

The 45-year-old, who spent most of his playing career as a defender in the Netherlands and Germany and had one season at Crystal Palace, was put in charge of the USMNT in December when he left Columbus Crew.

Since then, the Americans have played two friendly matches at home to Panama and Costa Rica and won 2-0 and 3-0 respectively.

Those two opponents are among the USA’s biggest rivals at this summer’s CONCACAF Gold Cup, so the victories will have provided a nice confidence boost.

Ecuador’s summer tournament is, of course, the Copa America in Brazil and they have been grouped with holders Chile, Uruguay and one of the two invited teams, Japan.

Hernan Dario Gomez is back for a second spell as Ecuador manager having taken them to the 2002 World Cup and his latest reign has begun promisingly with four wins out of six.

However, Gomez has named something of an experimental squad for this match plus Tuesday’s against Honduras, whereas Berhalter has opted for more in the way of experience, so the United States are backed to continue their superb start under their new manager.
