Turkey vs Uzbekistan Match Preview
Of all the UEFA-affiliated nations, Turkey are making the fastest start to the end-of-season schedule in terms of preparations and this is their second warm-up fixture for the Euro 2020 qualifiers.
Turkey were due to face arch-rivals Greece in Antalya on Thursday (result not known at the time of writing) and then host Uzbekistan for their first ever meeting with those opponents, before turning attention to a couple of difficult qualifying matches.
Next Saturday, the Turks will host world champions France and then travel to Iceland as they aim to build on their perfect start to the campaign, which consists of two decisive victories to nil so far against Albania and Moldova.
It has represented a fine opening to the second spell at the helm for Senol Gunes, who led Turkey to a brilliant third place at the 2002 World Cup and, more recently, Besiktas to back-to-back Super Lig titles in 2016 and 2017.
Gunes is taking a look at 33 players during this get-together and remarkably he has 38-year-old former Newcastle United midfielder Emre Belozoglu as captain, while another veteran, Burak Yilmaz, is among the attacking contingent along with Everton’s Cenk Tosun.
Uzbekistan were beaten in the round of 16 by Australia at this year’s Asian Cup and their mediocre record against European sides (see stats above) suggests the team now managed by fomer Inter Milan coach Hector Cuper will struggle to avoid defeat on this visit to Turkey.
