Turkey vs Iceland Match Preview

Turkey need only one point from their last two Group H matches to qualify for Euro 2020 – and we think that is exactly what they will collect when they host Iceland on Thursday.

Being joint top of the group table with world champions France is an excellent achievement for Turkey, who missed out on the 2018 World Cup but have compiled a terrific defensive record in particular which has taken them to the brink of next year’s tournament.

Senol Gunes’ side have had six wins to nil in their eight pool matches so far, including 2-0 at home to France, and even if things go wrong for them in Istanbul they still have a second bite of the cherry in terms of sealing qualification when they visit Andorra on Sunday.

Iceland still have a mathematical chance of pipping Turkey or France but need something of a miracle in the way of a big helping hand from Andorra and Moldova. However, the way in which the play-offs have been structured means Erik Hamren’s side will probably still reach a third consecutive major tournament nevertheless.

What Iceland have going for them here is a strong head-to-head record against Turkey (see above) and they inflicted the Crescent-Stars’ only defeat in this pool with a 2-1 victory in June courtesy of a Ragnar Sigurdsson double.

After a sticky spell, Iceland have improved their form in 2019 and may just be capable of holding Turkey here – but it will be the hosts that are celebrating Euro 2020 qualification.
