Tranmere Rovers vs Watford Match Preview

Watford squandered a fantastic opportunity to ease into the FA Cup fourth round in the original match of this tie, but are backed to make no such mistake on their trip to the Wirral.

The first game was nothing short of bizarre because the Hornets led 3-0 at half time through goals from Tom Dele-Bashiru, Nathaniel Chalobah and Roberto Pereyra, but then found themselves pegged back by a remarkable Tranmere recovery.

The League One club did not score until the 65th minute as Conor Jennings launched their fightback, with Emmanuel Monthe and Paul Mullin’s penalty providing further goals before Watford had Pereyra sent off which meant they were hanging on at the end.

Given how the opening 45 minutes at Vicarage Road played out, this replay will be far more welcome for Tranmere manager Micky Mellon than his Watford counterpart Nigel Pearson. Unless improvement work has taken place since I was at Prenton Park on December 29, that will be especially true of Pearson when he sees the pitch! It was in poor condition that day.

But the good news for both clubs is that if they progress on Tuesday, they will be at home in the fourth round against either Wolves or Manchester United. For Watford, that means either a re-run of last season’s semi-final, which they won, or another meeting with the team they beat 2-0 at Vicarage Road just before Christmas to spark their run of excellent league form.

The last 25 minutes of the first game really has been Watford’s only blip since Pearson took charge and after a 3-0 triumph at Bournemouth on Sunday, we will back them to atone for that lapse and score at least a couple of goals.
