Plenty of evidence points to Forest Green Rovers being a good-value bet to claim a first-leg lead away to Tranmere on Friday in their League Two play-off semi-final.

Although Tranmere’s home record this season is right up there with the best in this division, Forest Green and champions Lincoln were head and shoulders above the rest on their travels – and the head-to-head record is certainly in favour of the visitors to Prenton Park.

While Forest Green collected 41 points on the road to Lincoln’s 42, with the next best a mere 32, the Gloucestershire club banged in 40 away goals which was the most in the League Two regular season – and defensively they were pretty solid too.

As recently as Good Friday, Mark Cooper’s side won 1-0 at Tranmere with a Junior Mondal goal and they have never been beaten on their three visits to this Wirral venue (see stats above).

Also, as another part of their excellent head-to-head record, Forest Green won the National League play-off final 3-1 at Wembley two years ago against Tranmere, who made amends by following them up to the fourth tier 12 months later via the same method.

The outcome of the first match may well decide who gets to Wembley this time if either team can eke out an advantage and Forest Green’s away form gives their odds the greater appeal.
