Toulouse v Lyon Match Preview
Toulouse are a club still looking for their first major silverware having only won the second tier title three times in their history, although they have cemented a place in the top tier over the last few seasons. It hasn’t been easy maintaining that place for les Pitchouns though – they managed to avoid relegation on the final day of the season in the 2015/2016 campaign and two years later needed to win the relegation/promotion play-off fixture against Ajaccio.
This season they’ll be hoping to avoid all that drama and steer clear of the relegation fight developing towards the bottom of the table. As things stand at the half-way stage of the campaign, Alain Casanova’s men occupy a relatively comfortable 14th place after a couple of terrific results on the road, but home form still leaves a lot to be desired with just one win coming in their last nine matches. The hosts are available at 9/2 with bet365 in this one.
Olympique Lyonnais are out to finish in the top three this season as they look to cement their place in the Champions League. This year, les Gones have continued to fight for a top three finish at the top of the Ligue 1 table but they’ve also managed to make it through a difficult Champions League group, taking four points of Premier League holders Manchester City and they’ll now take on one of the tournament favourites in Barcelona in the Round of 16 next.
It’s been a bumpy return to form for Bruno Genesio’s men though. After overcoming lowly Bourges Foot in the Coupe de France, they have since been dumped out of the Coupe de Ligue by Strasbourg and held to a draw at home by Stade de Reims last time out. With the likes of Montpellier and Saint-Etienne (who they face on Sunday) hot on their heels, Lyon cannot afford to slip up here as they look for all three points at 8/11 with BlackType.
We are backing goals in this game. Toulouse have looked to play on the front foot more this season and whilst they’ve been racking up the goals, defensively they still leave a lot to be desired and both teams have scored in five of les Pitchouns’ last six matches in all competitions. Lyon meanwhile haven’t failed to find the net in any of their last seven games in all competitions so we’re backing the same bet again in this game at 8/11 with Paddy Power.
Max Gradel, formerly of Leeds United and Bournemouth, is enjoying one of his most prolific seasons so far as the main attacking outlet in this Toulouse outfit. The Cote D’Ivoire forward has found the net four times in his last four matches in all competitions taking his tally for the season to nine goals in all competitions. He’s our anytime scorer pick at 31/10 with Unibet.
